Discuss: Alex Wong vs. Billy Bell – Nigel Tricked Us?

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

So, you might’ve heard two weeks ago that only one of the two aforementioned boys would make the top 10 this season. Words straight from Nigel himself! But, after last night, you know that both Billy Bell (S7) and Alex Wong (S7) made the (now) top 11.

Here’s some interesting insight on the situation…

Last week, [Korbi] met up with the aforementioned Top 11 the day after they flew into L.A. and got some one-on-one time with Billy, who said that someone posted [Korbi's] interview with Mr. Lythgoe on his facebook page and he freaked out, thinking that Alex had been cut.

He immediately called Alex up to ask if he’d made the show and, upon hearing that he did, they were both just confused.

Looks like neither of the boys knew about their supposed situation. Here’s a video of Zap2It Korbi’s interview with Billy Bell, from the LA photoshoot.

So, do you feel tricked by Nigel? Or do you think he was merely cautious with his words? After all, as it seems by the show last night, Billy was the sixth boy, and indeed wasn’t in the top 10, thus proving that Nigel wasn’t lying.

What do you think about both Alex and Billy making the top 11? Thoughts on the format of the top 11 reveal last night? Did you like the whole judges-going-to-their-houses stint?

Gossip Girl: Nigel Lythgoe on Billy Bell and Alex Wong

Saturday, May 29th, 2010

Korbi TV recently posted a video of Nigel Lythgoe talking about season 7, but more importantly, he had a little snippet about the comeback kids, Alex Wong (season five, made Top 20 but forced to drop out due to contractual issues with Miami City Ballet) and Billy Bell (season six, made Top 20 but forced to drop out due to illness).

In fact, two well-known “So You Think You Can Dance” hopefuls — Billy Bell, who made Season 6′s Top 20 but had to bow out because of an illness, and Alex Wong, who was selected for Season 5′s Top 20 but whose contractual obligation to The Miami Ballet kept him from accepting the spot — both auditioned for the show again this season and, as we previously reported, both made it to Vegas… but only one of them will get through.

Yep.

Nigel Lythgoe tells Korbi TV exclusively that between Bell and Wong, only one has been selected for Season 7′s Top 10.

Video of the interview can be seen here.

What do you think? Is Nigel trying to stir drama between the two fanbases? Is he testing to see which contestant is more popular? Is he seeing who should be the anointed winner of season 7? One thing’s for sure: only one will make the Top 10.

SYTYCD7: Show Format Changes

Monday, March 29th, 2010

Changes!

1. There will only be a Top 10 this year. 5 girls, 5 boys.
2. Only one (new) contestant will be eliminated each week.
3. The contestants will not pick their own genres anymore. (~cough~) They will draw photographs of an all-star and that will dictate their style. The all-stars will never be out of their element.
4. 10 contestants from the past six seasons will partner season 7′s Top 10.
5. Only the new contestants will be judged. The all-stars will be asked to leave the stage after the performance.
6. America will vote for their favorite dancer, and one of the bottom 3 will go home.
7. The Top 10 will rotate partners from the all-star dance pool.
8. Mary Murphy will be off the permanent panel and will choreograph and guest judge again.
9. Mia Michaels will be back.
10. The all-stars will not choreograph their routines, they will learn as a normal partner.
11. The finale will be the original format, dancing solos, with each other, groups, etc. No all-stars to our understanding.

Nigel will release the all-star cast soon, we’ll keep you updated!

But let’s start speculating now! Post your guesses in the comments.

Edit:
- Travis Wall (S2) will not be in the all-star pool. He just tweeted he will be coming back as a choreographer.
- Blake McGrath (S1) tweeted he was not chosen as part of the all-star cast.

Nigel Talks SYTYCD7: Mary Murphy, Judging Panel, Paula Abdul

Friday, March 19th, 2010

Reality TV World posted an article today about an interview with SYTYCD executive producer Nigel Lythgoe.

“[There will be] shocking, shocking, shocking format changes,” Lythgoe told The New York Post when asked if he could elaborate on a recent Twitter posting in which he had teased “shocking but great” changes would be coming to So You Think You Can Dance’s seventh season, which premieres May 27.

Still no idea what this means, but here’s to it being a good change.

According to Lythgoe, his tweet was not referring to the potential departure of Mary Murphy, who has served as a regular judge since So You Think You Can Dance’s third season but reportedly missed several of the seventh season’s audition tour stops.

“I wasn’t talking about that, but she did miss a bunch. You know, I’d like to see Mary choreographing this season. But her absence gave me the opportunity to use more people as judges, to move around more,” he told The Post.

However whether it’s a non-permanent judging role for Murphy or something else, Lythgoe suggested the seventh season will likely feature some judging panel changes.

I thought she missed all of them? Further supports the claim I made awhile ago about Mary Murphy getting taken off the judging panel. I do hope that means more choreography from her though, perhaps a collaboration with Dmitry Chaplin?

Nigel didn’t have any kind words for Paula Abdul, though.

In addition, Lythgoe appeared to suggest that — similar to her Idol exit — Abdul rejected his So You Think You Can Dance offers because the show was unwilling to meet her financial demands.

“I was rather shocked she didn’t pick up and join us at any point. I mean, Katie Holmes was there, Jennifer Lopez was there. I know we don’t have Idol money and so does Paula, but at the end of the day I do plenty of things for no money because I want to support dance,” he told The Post.

“And as an dancer/performer/choreographer, I would have thought she’d like to support us.”

Video: Nigel Wants a "Get to Know the Top 20" Episode for Season Six

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

In this interview, Nigel Lythgoe speaks about how people complain about the Top 20 not getting equal airtime before the first week of competition. Since the video source is Hulu, our non-American readers won’t be able to view the video, but I typed out the gist of what he said for that particular notion.

“Another change I’d like to make is introducing that Top 20. Because again we get so many complaints with both this and Idol, that they’ve seen certain members of the Top 20 but they haven’t seen them all. They don’t know who they are. I would love to do a Top 20 show where they’re not in competition. They’re just showing us what their style is and how good they are and how deserving they are of being in the Top 20, and then start the competition a week later.”

From what I heard, the revealing of the Top 20 will definitely be different for season six, so it’s highly probable that we will be getting a dedicated Top 20 episode. Thank you Skyy for the heads up!
