Video: President Obama mentions Michelle loves So You Think You Can Dance

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

United States President Barack Obama mentioned that his wife Michelle loves So You Think You Can Dance. Not much of a video unless you’re into politics, but I found it cool to hear the words “So You Think You Can Dance” in his rhetoric.

Fast forward to 8:00! Thank you 1Wynona on Twitter for the heads up!

SYTYCD5 to begin on May 21st!

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

“FOX will let the Cat (Deeley) out of the bag again on May 21.

The network has set that day — it’s a Thursday — as the premiere date for the fifth season of its top summer series, “So You Think You Can Dance.” The premiere will run for two hours and will be followed by another two-hour episode on Wednesday, May 27.

Following the conclusion of the audition rounds, the series will settle into its regular schedule of performance shows on Wednesdays and results on Thursdays.

Deeley will return as host, as will judges Mary Murphy and Nigel Lythgoe (who’s also one of the executive producers). Auditions for the show are still going on, with dates in Denver (March 12), Memphis, Tenn. (March 16) and Seattle (March 28). More information on the tryouts is at FOX.com.

Last season’s winner, Joshua Allen, walked away with a $250,000 prize and an offer for a role in the movie “Step Up 3-D,” directed by sometime “SYTYCD” judge Adam Shankman.”

Inside Scoop on ‘So You Think You Can Dance 5′ Revealed

Friday, December 12th, 2008

The previous season of the Fox dance reality competition, So You Think You Can Dance, wrapped up practically ages ago. Now, fans are on the edge of their seats for its upcoming season. While the show has been scouting America for its next dance sensation, impatient watchers are scouting cyberspace for news about season 5.

There’s no need to worry about the future of So You Think You Can Dance, but there is a cause for excitement. A fan of the show wrote to E! Online‘s Kristin Dos Santos, asking about anything to look forward to on the series’ fifth season. That is, other than the riveting twists on the dance floor.

According to one of entertainment’s top eyes and ears, a couple of favorites might just return next year. “Sources tell me season-three faves Pasha Kovalev and Anya Garnis may be back to choreograph in the new season,” Kristin revealed.

She continued by saying “Pasha already met up with the crew while they were auditioning in New York, but it all depends on their contracts for Nigel Lythgoe’s new reality series on Fox.”

We got to know Pasha Kovalev and Anya Garnis when they auditioned together in New York City back in 2007. Both the dancers were born in Russia, and began dancing at a very early age. Prior to their time on the show, they have been dance partners for nine years. On So You Think You Can Dance, Anya became known for being the first contestant on Mary Murphy’s “Hot Tamale Train.” Meanwhile, Pasha was noted for his cha-cha-cha with then-partner, Jessi Peralta (s3), who was injured at the time.

After being eliminated on So You Think You Can Dance, both Kovalev and Garnis made a move to other projects. They appeared on a results show performance for the seventh season of Dancing with the Stars, and also won fifth place in the American Ballroom Challenge finals.

Now that they’ve managed to catapult themselves even more to the spotlight, it’s only a matter of time before Nigel Lythgoe takes them in once more for So You Think You Can Dance.

Cat Deeley Discusses Season 5 Auditions of ‘So You Think You Can Dance’

Friday, December 5th, 2008

Motivating contestants on So You Think You Can Dance is just an added bonus to having Cat Deeley as your host. She really gets into the spirit of things on the reality series, showing genuine kindness towards the hopefuls and encouraging each of them to keep going. With the auditions for season 5 of the hit dance contest in full swing, Cat spoke to her audiences about what’s been going on so far.

Cat Deeley was interviewed by TV Guide, and she opened up about how she feels towards the dancers and how she manages to really connect with them. She also revealed a few things about what the judges really want to see on stage.

“If you can make it a really great life experience for everybody who comes on, then win or lose there can only be one winner. But then win or lose, you’ve got 20 people who’ve taken away something that they’re gonna tell their kids about and their kids’ kids!” Deeley explained.

“I try and stay in touch with them all too,” she says. Indeed, this extraordinary host is doing her best to develop a personal bond with each of the contestants. She even throws a BBQ party every fourth of July, inviting the dancers over and spending time with each other. “They come right to my house and have beers and margaritas and they swim in my pool.”

Deeley also opened up about the amazing dresses she got to wear during the series, even pointing out that some of them are a bit “silly” for her tastes. But she dons them anyway, hoping to boost the morale of the competitors.

When the host was asked about what we can expect from next season’s So You Think You Can Dance, she admitted that the standards have gone up. “I think they will always be stepping up, because it just has to be. If you see someone doing a double flip off the back of the stage and then run up the wall and if someone else does it again, it is good, but you can’t help but want the bar to be raised a little bit, you know.”

“You’ve got to do something to make America pick up the phone and vote. And they’ve got to connect with your personality, there’s got to be something that’s gonna set you apart from everybody else,” she adds. “We’re not kind of talking about the best dancer, but America’s favorite dancer, which is a different thing.”

Q&A with Mary Murphy

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

If there’s one word to describe Mary Murphy, it would be “loud,” although she would probably rather we go with “enthusiastic.” The So You Think You Can Dance judge has become known for the high-pitched scream she emits when she’s impressed with a dance performance – and she’s often impressed.
Still, as a championship ballroom dancer, Murphy knows what it takes to really succeed in the business, which is why she’s currently in Toronto to serve as a guest judge on this week’s episode of So You Think You Can Dance Canada. She took a few minutes to tell us how Canadian dancers differ from American dancers, what it will take to win the competition and why she thinks the show is such a hit.

————–
Q: In your opinion, what moves a dance routine beyond good to making you yell, “WOO!”
A: [Laughs] Well, I think most of the time, usually, if I scream, it usually happens with a really fired-up number; sultry and sexy and hard-hitting and very dynamic, very dramatic. That usually gets me on my feet. A lot of times I look back sometimes because I know some of the dancers would have liked a scream. Over the last few years when a number has really touched me, and it did go beyond, you know, it was absolutely perfect, the technique was fabulous – like I said, it takes you to a magical place – I was sad sometimes because I couldn’t get a scream up for that because it touched me so much, it leaves me sitting there. I can barely move sometimes. It brings me to tears. But they deserve every ounce of all my enthusiasm. Most of them know that I really, really loved it and adored it, but it takes you to a different place.
